Washi tape is one of those small things that makes everything look more finished: a journal page, a planner spread, a parcel, a card. Ours is made from Japanese rice paper with a water-based adhesive, so it tears by hand, sticks well and lifts off again without ripping paper. Here are seven easy ways to use it.
1. Frame a journal or planner page
Run a strip along the top or side of the page to mark a new week or month. A botanical design like our New Holland washi tape, with protea, banksia and golden wattle, turns a plain lined page into something you want to keep writing in.
2. Make tabs and bookmarks
Fold a short piece over the edge of a page so half sticks to the front and half to the back. You get a reusable tab that is easy to find and easy to move.
3. Stick photos, tickets and pressed flowers
Washi tape holds paper keepsakes in a scrapbook or travel journal without glue, and it is gentle enough to reposition while you plan the layout.
4. Wrap gifts without plastic tape
Use it instead of clear tape on brown kraft paper. A strip of our Aveline washi tape, with cockatoos, banksia and gumnuts, is all the decoration a parcel needs. Add a handwritten tag and you are done.
5. Decorate cards and envelopes
Seal an envelope, add a border to a birthday card or make a quick bunting pattern with small triangles.
6. Label jars, boxes and folders
Write on the tape with a fine pen to label pantry jars, craft boxes or file folders. When things change, peel it off and relabel.
7. Hang art without nails
Washi tape is a renter-friendly way to put prints and postcards on a wall. Tape the corners of an A4 botanical art print for an easy gallery wall you can change every season.
